Smokefree Tangata Beats is a live, original music, nationwide, youth event that recognises and reflects the unique cultural identity of Aotearoa New Zealand and the South Pacific.
The event started in 1994 as the Urban Beats Award within Smokefreerockquest. The event has steadily built over the years into a competition in its own right, and was originally called Smokefree Pacifica Beats. It was renamed as Smokefree Tangata Beats for 2018 to be more inclusive.
The Smokefree Tangata Beats competition aims to be a platform for developing and growing young music talent in Aotearoa. It has been a nurturing ground for young artists who are successful today, such as Nesian Mystik – Nesian Mystik are the only New Zealand band to ever have ten singles all certified gold or platinum.
Smokefree Tangata Beats aims to motivate young musicians to prove their ability with cultural relevance and realise the heights they can reach in their music careers, and to encourage their peers to support 100% original Aotearoa Kiwi music.

You CANNOT enter in more than one band, or more than one Solo/duo act - but you CAN enter in a band and as a solo/duo – just one of each.
If you’re planning on entering in both categories, you’ll need to enter in the ‘online’ solo-duo region.
You can add a band member, but you will need new forms to be signed off by your principal/HOD, and guardian. Changing band members can only be done before you send your regional video entry. Email us at help@smokefreerockquest.co.nz for the new forms, and give us a call at (03) 545 6574 to let us know what’s happening. Please note that this can’t be done via the online entry process.
You need to let us know as soon as possible. There are various options available, depending on what stage of the competition it happens. You can always perform without them, but you can only replace them prior to your first performance in the competition. Changing schools is not a problem, but you will still need to contact us.
Contact us at help@smokefreerockquest.co.nz or (03) 545 6574.
